GMA screens 334 inmates at Ankaful Prison

The Central Regional Division of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) conducted health screenings for 334 inmates and staff at Ankaful Maximum Security Prison on August 22, 2026. This initiative was supported by the donation of medical supplies by the GMA and was organized in collaboration with the Central Regional Health Directorate.

The screening was prompted by a call from the prison's Chaplaincy Unit, led by ADP Rev Joseph Adobaw-Ogo, who also oversees the Prison Medicine and Equipment Bank, scheduled to launch on September 30, 2026.

The GMA's involvement is part of their social responsibility to ensure quality primary healthcare reaches all, even those in prison. The health conditions of inmates are often neglected, which can lead to untreated infections, hypertension, diabetes, mental health issues, and other chronic conditions. Many of these conditions were undetected until complications arose, posing a burden on families and the healthcare system.

During the GMA's visit, the team encountered a high prevalence of undiagnosed and poorly controlled chronic conditions, including hypertension, skin conditions, hemorrhoids, and eye problems. The inmates expressed profound gratitude, as it was often the first medical attention they had received in a long time.

The GMA also contributed a variety of medications provided by pharmaceutical partners like Add Pharma, Mega Lifesciences, and Hale Pharmacy. The Central Regional Commander, DDP Joseph Asabre, appreciated the timely support, considering the upcoming launch of the Prison Medicine and Equipment Bank under the leadership of Director General of Prisons, Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie.

The GMA's efforts highlight the essential role of healthcare in the correctional system, ensuring inmates receive necessary medical care and promoting a healthier society upon their eventual reintegration.
