Ghana targets 1,200MW new thermal capacity by 2029 – Jinapor

The Ghanaian government is aiming to acquire 1,200 megawatts of combined-cycle thermal power capacity by 2029, according to Minister for Energy and Green Transition John Abdulai Jinapor. This initiative, unveiled at a recent energy conference, is part of the government's strategy to ensure a dependable electricity supply while lowering the cost of power generation in the country.

Jinapor emphasized that this decision was made with Ghana's own resources, signaling an ambitious policy commitment. He expressed confidence in the project's completion by the target year, describing it as a potential "game-changer" for the nation's energy sector. However, Jinapor acknowledged that Ghana will still need additional power between now and the project's completion, highlighting ongoing efforts to bridge the supply gap during transition.

The minister stressed that the new capacity would help alleviate the economic strain on consumers through more affordable power, while also bolstering the country's industrialization goals. He stressed the importance of a robust electricity sector that delivers not just sufficient electricity, but also reliable and affordable power, essential for supporting businesses and industries.

Jinapor affirmed that Ghana's energy sector will keep pursuing reforms and investments to create a more financially sustainable and competitive electricity landscape.
