Ghana targets 1,200MW new thermal capacity by 2029 – Jinapor

Ghana aims to acquire 1,200 megawatts of combined-cycle thermal power capacity by 2029, according to Minister for Energy and Green Transition John Abdulai Jinapor. This ambitious project is set to bolster the country's electricity supply and reduce power generation costs, as stated by Mr Jinapor during the Future of Energy Conference.

The government has made a bold decision to procure the additional thermal capacity using Ghana's own resources, with the project expected to be completed by 2029. Mr Jinapor expressed confidence in the timeline, describing the initiative as a potential "game-changer" for Ghana's energy sector. However, the Minister acknowledged that there will be a need for additional power between now and the project's completion, and the government is working on arrangements to bridge the supply gap during the transition period.

The additional thermal capacity will ultimately help alleviate the burden of expensive power on consumers while supporting the country's industrialisation agenda. Mr Jinapor emphasized that Ghana's energy sector must not only generate sufficient electricity but also ensure reliable and affordable power to support businesses and industries. The government remains committed to pursuing reforms and investments aimed at building a more financially sustainable and competitive electricity sector.
