GB's Dart and Jones advance in US Open qualifying

British tennis players Harriet Dart and Fran Jones have secured successful openings in their campaigns to qualify for the US Open singles main draw. Dart, who has previously advanced to the second round of the US Open twice, defeated Jordyn Hazelitt 6-0, 6-7 (1-7), 6-1 in New York's first round of qualifying. She will now take on 16-year-old American Kristina Penickova in her next match. Jones, who made her US Open debut last year, overcame Nuria Brancaccio of Italy 6-3, 6-4 and will face Germany's Mona Barthel next.

In the men's qualifying event, Jodie Burrage was defeated 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 by Spain's Guiomar Maristany, while Henry Searle was swept aside 6-1, 6-2 by 16-year-old American Michael Antonius. Antonius will now face former US Open semi-finalist Kei Nishikori in the second round after the Japanese 36-year-old edged out Austrian Sebastian Ofner 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.

The women's draw saw 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu advance with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Dutch player Eva Vedder. Heather Watson, who had previously reached the quarter-finals in New York, will resume her qualifying campaign with a second-round match against Spain's Angela Fita Boluda. In the men's draw, British players Jacob Fearnley, Toby Samuel, Billy Harris, Harry Wendelken, and Jack Pinnington Jones will all return to the court in pursuit of their goal of reaching the Flushing Meadows main draw.

To do so, they must triumph through three rounds of qualifying, with the singles main draw set to commence on Sunday.
