FULL LIST: Nigeria, other African countries dominate world’s 60 poorest by GDP-PPP per capita

In a 2026 ranking by Global Finance magazine, based on GDP per capita at purchasing power parity, Nigeria and several other African countries are among the 60 poorest countries in the world. Burundi is ranked the poorest, with a GDP per capita of $994.23, followed by the Central African Republic at $1,437.72 and South Sudan at $1,467.19. Nine out of the 10 countries at the bottom of the ranking are in Africa, with Yemen being the only non-African country among them.

Nigeria ranks 56th with a GDP per capita of $9,532.92, down from 44th in the 2025 ranking. Niger ranks 11th with $2,108.46, Sudan is at 13th with $2,427.43, and Burkina Faso is 16th with $3,060.34. Lesotho ranks 17th with $3,211.83, Chad and Guinea-Bissau are 18th and 19th with $3,284.18 and $3,304.84 respectively. Mali is 20th with $3,480.41, Togo is 21st with $3,563.31, The Gambia is 22nd with $3,664.60, and Sierra Leone is 23rd with $3,709.84.

Other countries from Africa in the bottom 60 include Uganda at 26th with $3,923.83, Vanuatu, Comoros, Rwanda, and Tanzania at 27th, 28th, 29th, and 30th with $3,938.10, $4,031.17, $4,190.43, and $4,354.57 respectively. Kenya is 44th with $7,590.60, Ethiopia is 32nd with $4,498.55, Guinea is 33rd with $4,746.77, and Benin is 34th with $4,758.22. Senegal is 37th with $5,440.63, Cameroon is 38th with $5,782.69, Kenya is 44th with $7,590.60, and Zimbabwe is 46th with $7,985.23.
