FULL LIST: Nigeria, other African countries dominate world’s 60 poorest by GDP-PPP per capita

African nations dominated the Global Finance magazine's 2026 ranking of the world's 60 poorest countries, based on GDP per capita at purchasing power parity. Burundi, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan were the three lowest-ranked countries, with GDP per capita of $994.23, $1,437.72, and $1,467.19 respectively. Yemen was the only non-African country in the bottom 10.

Nigeria ranked 56th with a GDP per capita of $9,532.92, down from 44th place in 2025. Niger, Sudan, and Burkina Faso ranked 11th, 13th, and 16th respectively. Lesotho and Chad occupied 17th and 18th positions, while Guinea-Bissau ranked 19th. Mali, Togo, and the Gambia followed at 20th, 21st, and 22nd places. Uganda ranked 26th with a GDP per capita of $3,923.83.

Vanuatu, Comoros, Rwanda, and Tanzania occupied the 27th to 30th positions. Kenya ranked 44th, while Zimbabwe came in 46th. Côte d'Ivoire was 48th, Ghana 51st, and Mauritania 52nd. Angola was 59th, and Laos came in 60th place.
