From draft-day slide to preseason star, QB Garrett Nussmeier is finding an opening with the Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A once-deemed first-round draft pick now finds himself in the seventh round with the Kansas City Chiefs. Garrett Nussmeier’s journey from a star LSU quarterback to a seventh-round draft selection has provided him the chance to prove his worth. Nussmeier, who now serves as a backup to Patrick Mahomes and Justin Fields, has found his niche in the preseason finale against Seattle.

“Honestly, I’m ecstatic to be here. This is what I’ve dreamed of my entire life,” Nussmeier shared. “I’m trying my best, and I’m in a great position with two exceptional quarterbacks, Justin and Pat, to learn from.”

Mahomes, a two-time MVP and three-time Super Bowl champ, and Fields, a first-round pick who has struggled with consistency, provide Nussmeier with invaluable learning opportunities.
