Fourth Montreal police officer suspended amid racism allegations

A fourth Montreal police officer has been suspended amid allegations of racism and discrimination within the force, leading to the dissolution of a patrol unit in the city's north. According to Montreal police, the officer was part of a 16-member patrol unit that was disbanded in June following accusations of officers shaving the hair of racialized citizens and keeping the hair as trophies.

The police chief, Fady Dagher, suspended the officer in addition to two others who were suspended previously in connection with similar allegations. The incidents have been forwarded to Quebec's prosecution service for further investigation. The news of the fourth suspension occurred two weeks after the public had a chance to voice their concerns and questions to Dagher during a special meeting at Montreal City Hall.

Montreal residents expressed frustration over the persistent mistrust between law enforcement and the multicultural community of Montreal North. Some residents called for an end to random street checks, which Dagher stated are not permitted, though he acknowledged that some officers may still carry them out. Fo Niemi, executive director of the Centre for Research-Action on Race, emphasized that the police cannot resolve these issues alone and that city politicians, boroughs, and other services must be involved in finding solutions.

Montreal police have stated that they will not provide further information on the suspensions as an internal investigation is currently underway, and the police force is conducting its own inquiry into the matter.
