First-inning woes for Framber Valdez leave Tigers in brutal hole again

Framber Valdez, the Detroit Tigers' left-handed starter, has been struggling in the first inning of games recently. During Monday's 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, Valdez struggled through a 28-pitch first inning, allowing two runs to set the stage for a costly deficit. The Rays took advantage of a pair of singles and a Brett Callahan error in left field to score two runs, ultimately leading to a 4-1 victory.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch expressed frustration with Valdez's performance, stating it is frustrating for both him and the team. Valdez acknowledged the need to elevate his game early in the inning, focusing on being more aggressive against hitters and attacking the strike zone from the beginning. Despite struggling in the first inning, Valdez settled down in the second and third innings, preventing a larger blowout.

However, Tampa Bay continued to chip away, scoring three more runs in the fourth inning. Valvez faced more challenges in the sixth inning, allowing Jonathan Aranda to hit a solo home run. Overall, Valvez gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits across 84 pitches in six innings, resulting in a 4.35 ERA for the season. The Tigers' 6-game losing streak continued, with the team now 9 games back of the AL Central division lead and 4.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the final AL wild-card spot.
