EU Accelerates Ukraine Funding: €22 Billion in Defense Supplies Already Approved

The European Union is expediting the distribution of both financial and defense aid to Ukraine under its planned €90 billion loan, according to European officials emphasizing the critical need for swift support to Kyiv, reports UATV English. European Commission spokesperson Balazs Ujvari disclosed on August 25 that Ukraine had not formally requested the acceleration of payments.

However, the European Commission is moving to expedite the execution of the prearranged support plan. "We are accelerating our operations because we comprehend the urgency of this matter and the stakes involved," Ujvari stated. As of now, the EU has approved €22 billion out of the €28 billion earmarked for defense-related support.

The delivery timelines have been established for the complete €22 billion, with €8.5 billion already disbursed. Ujvari anticipates further approvals and payments in the forthcoming weeks, highlighting that the EU will maintain a heightened emphasis on accelerating defense assistance. Concerning direct budget support, the European Commission spokesperson elucidated that funds are being dispensed through two channels: the Macro-Financial Assistance program and the Ukraine Support program.

Under the Macro-Financial Assistance mechanism, the EU has already supplied Ukraine with €3.2 billion. An additional disbursement is slated for the second half of September, with another payment projected by year-end. Simultaneously, the EU is deliberating on supplementary financing avenues with other global partners to aid in bridging Ukraine’s budget shortfall.

Ujvari pointed out that the €90 billion loan was originally intended to meet approximately two-thirds of Ukraine’s anticipated requirements. "The European Union's contribution is substantial and plays a pivotal role in funneling funds to Ukraine, yet it falls short of being entirely sufficient on its own," Ujvari remarked. He further noted that the EU is addressing the matter with partners via the G7, bilateral engagements, and other international venues, urging other nations to emulate Europe's example and contribute to Ukraine's financial and defense exigencies.

The European Commission has also previously affirmed that Ukraine may utilize funds from the €90 billion EU loan for the acquisition of air defense systems and munitions.
