ECG trains 23 Ashanti engineers to detect equipment faults before outages

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has trained 23 technicians and engineers from the Ashanti Sub-Transmission Region in infrared thermography. The two-day intensive workshop in Kumasi aims to strengthen preventive maintenance and minimize equipment-related outages. The program, which lasted over 10 years, utilizes thermal imaging cameras to identify abnormal heat patterns, or "hotspots," on critical electrical infrastructure.

ECG selected participants from various sub-transmission technical sections, including protection and control, network maintenance, substation and switchgear maintenance, and control operations. The training, led by Acting General Manager Ing. Christopher Anafo and headquarters facilitator Ing. Randy Delanyo Adjorlolo, combines classroom instruction with practical field exercises.

Ing. Randy Delanyo Adjorlolo emphasized that the initiative represents a proactive step towards improving ECG's preventive maintenance culture. Substation and Switchgear Maintenance Manager Ing. Edem Evans Agra explained that early detection of hotspots will help reduce unexpected equipment failures, minimize power interruptions, and extend the lifespan of critical assets.

The Head of Public Relations for Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Collins Manu, stated that the training complements ECG's ongoing network improvement efforts by proactively identifying and mitigating potential faults before they impact customers. This training aligns with ECG's broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency and improve the reliability of electricity supply across the Ashanti Region.
