The Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to pose significant challenges, as detailed in the Uganda Weekly External Situation Report 15, dated 23 August 2026. Despite being in the third month of the response, the outbreak remains marked by sustained transmission, elevated mortality rates, and expanding geographical reach.

The epidemiological landscape has become more varied, with ongoing transmission in well-established hotspots in Ituri, a surge in transmission in specific areas of Nord-Kivu and Haut-Uélé, and the spread of the virus to regions that were previously unaffected. Since the previous report, numbered 14, there has been a substantial increase in the number of confirmed cases and deaths.

A total of 563 new confirmed cases and 302 confirmed deaths have been reported, raising the cumulative total of cases to 5,584, with 2,680 fatalities.

The number of health zones affected by the outbreak has grown from 55 to 57, spread across six provinces. The latest health zones impacted are Viadana in Bas-Uélé and Mutwanga in Nord-Kivu.
