E-scooter hospitalizations up by 40%, many with head and brain injuries: data

TORONTO - The Canadian Institute for Health Information reported a 40% increase in hospitalizations related to e-scooter use between 2025 and 2026. The rise was observed for both children and adults who were riding e-scooters. Fractures and head and brain injuries were the primary reasons for hospitalizations among e-scooter riders.

According to the data, there were 837 hospitalizations last year, compared to 601 in the same period the previous year. The number of children aged 15 and under hospitalized for e-scooter injuries nearly tripled, with 150 kids requiring hospitalization, compared to 54 children in the previous year. Dense urban areas such as Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec experienced the highest number of injuries.
