Dolly Parton: The country legend who sang from the heart

Dolly Parton, a celebrated country singer from Tennessee's Smoky Mountains, left an indelible mark on the music world with her poignant and honest songs. Over the course of a seven-decade career, the 1946-born legend won 10 Grammy Awards, sold over 100 million records globally, and penned more than 3,000 songs. Parton viewed songwriting as her primary form of self-expression, often describing it as her therapy.

Her business acumen was equally impressive, as she adeptly navigated her long-standing career spanning more than 60 years. Parton, born to a poor farming family, grew up with a rich musical heritage; her mother sang folk songs, and her aunt played the guitar and composed tunes. At six, Parton began singing at her local church, and by her teenage years, she was performing on television.

At 13, she made her debut at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, backed by Johnny Cash, receiving three standing ovations. Parton's fashion choices were unconventional, drawing inspiration from a local character dubbed the "town tramp." Her breakthrough came with the 1971 hit, Joshua, and her first Grammy nomination. In 1974, Parton also wrote one of her most iconic songs, I Will Always Love You, initially written for a lover but eventually covered by Whitney Houston in 1992, turning it into a universally acclaimed power ballad.
