Chainalysis-led operation flags 7,700 accounts in child abuse probe

Operation Lighthouse, a global effort led by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, has identified over 7,700 suspect accounts linked to child sexual abuse material (CSAM) across 11 crypto exchanges and payment services. The investigation generated 14,300 investigative leads and targeted 29,120 crypto addresses and digital identifiers connected to more than 100 CSAM platforms, forums, and distribution networks spanning the surface and dark web.

Suspects identified in the operation include military personnel, law enforcement officers, medical professionals, educators, and individuals with direct access to children. Tom McLouth, a senior intelligence analyst at Chainalysis, emphasized that each lead represents a child at risk. The operation involved law enforcement agencies, private-sector partners, and specialized nonprofits, such as Europol, the UK National Crime Agency, Binance, Coinbase, Block, and the Internet Watch Foundation.

Participants utilized onchain intelligence to develop leads for legal processes and case development. Chainalysis expects the results to lead to arrests, prosecutions, and account-level disruption. This operation builds on other initiatives by crypto firms and child-protection organizations to enhance intelligence sharing around crypto activity linked to exploitation.

Europol highlighted the importance of joint action due to the exploitation of financial services, payment systems, and internet platforms by perpetrators. Binance, a participating exchange, recently partnered with nonprofit Stop The Traffik to improve its detection and investigation of crypto activity related to human trafficking and child exploitation.
