Canada unveils counter tariffs of 15% to 50% on US goods

Ottawa, Tuesday — Canada has unveiled retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, ranging between 15 percent and 50 percent, escalating the longstanding trade dispute between the two nations. The new measures are set to take effect on September 8, a date previously announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney after the U.S. imposed 50-percent duties on Canadian products on Saturday. Officials stated that Canada's duties will mirror those of the United States, impacting sectors such as steel, dairy, and electronics.

Canada's Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne stated that this response is an unprecedented challenge, but Canada will confront it head-on. Champagne emphasized the unity among Canadians in their response to the tariffs. The steep U.S. tariffs have already targeted approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, representing around 5.5 percent of total exports to the United States, following the collapse of trade negotiations at the last minute.
