Cameroon’s Baleba joins as Man United boost midfield options

Manchester United has confirmed the signing of Cameroon's Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion, the club announced on Tuesday. The 22-year-old midfielder is the third signing by the Red Devils during the summer transfer window. United's statement confirmed that Baleba's £70 million move is subject to registration formalities.

The £70 million fee brings United's total spending on midfield reinforcements this summer to over £150 million. Baleba's arrival is part of a new-look midfield at Old Trafford, following the departures of Belgium's Youri Tielemans and Brazil's Andrey Santos. Veteran Casemiro left the club at the end of last season.

United praised Baleba, highlighting his impressive statistics for Brighton. During the 2024/25 season, he had the sixth-highest combined number of tackles and interceptions among Premier League midfielders, and ranked fourth for progressive ball carries per 90 minutes. The club had shown interest in Baleba a year ago but was deterred by Brighton's asking price.
