Base models still big in South Africa: These were the 20 top-selling derivatives in Q2 2026

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) reported in the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year that 124 new renewable energy generation facilities have been registered, bringing in R20.18 billion in investment and adding 804MW of power. A significant portion of this new power comes from two large wind projects, demonstrating the growing importance of wind energy in South Africa's power supply.

The Impofu Wind cluster in the Eastern Cape's Kouga region is a prime example, having been completed in June 2026 after a decade of planning by Red Cap Energy. This 330MW wind project, now owned and operated by Enel Green Power South Africa, utilizes a recently constructed 116km transmission line to deliver power directly to Sasol’s Secunda facility via Gqeberha.

Mark Tanton, CEO of Red Cap Energy, emphasized that building this 116km power line was not just about installing electrical poles, but about working directly with local communities. The project required negotiating land rights across 87 properties and maintaining constant communication with various stakeholders, including private farm owners, state forestry managers, correctional facilities, and local municipal councils.

Red Cap developers collaborated with local groups to address existing public infrastructure issues, such as fixing a crucial municipal power line in Nelson Mandela Bay that was suffering from aging pylons. The successful completion of this infrastructure repair ensured stable power supply and economic growth in the region. The lessons learned from the Impofu Wind project are now being applied to an even larger venture: the 720MW Nuweveld Wind Farm in the Upper Karoo, which will necessitate constructing an additional 100km of transmission lines.

This collaborative approach aligns with the government's Independent Transmission Infrastructure Procurement Programme, which aims to encourage private companies to build power lines and hand them over to state management. CEO of Red Cap Energy, Mark Tanton, highlighted that the real-world problem-solving involved in these projects occurs on the ground, during negotiations and problem-solving when routes need to change.
