Australia's Music Chart Bars Fully AI-Generated Music

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has announced new rules to exclude wholly AI-generated music from the country's official music charts. The changes will be implemented starting with the ARIA chart dated August 31, differentiating between music primarily created by artificial intelligence and recordings where AI is used as a creative tool.

However, AI-generated music will still be eligible for chart placement if it is substantially human-made and does not raise concerns about stream or chart position manipulation. ARIA chief executive Annabelle Herd emphasized that artists are already employing AI creatively, and the charts should accommodate this. She urged all stakeholders in the music industry to support human artistry and implement similar restrictions across their codes.

If an AI track enters the charts, ARIA has the authority to refuse acceptance, remove the recording retroactively or proactively, adjust chart positions, and revoke awards. The move is part of a larger effort by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) to establish global principles for AI-assisted recordings, which require eligible AI-assisted recordings to remain substantially human-made and avoid artificial manipulation of streams.
