AI-generated music banned from Australian charts

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) announced that artificial intelligence-generated music will be prohibited from the country's top charts starting from the forthcoming Friday. Under these new regulations, ARIA stated that music must be predominantly created by humans to qualify for the charts. Tracks entirely produced by AI would not meet the eligibility criteria.

ARIA explained that their charts would not include songs where AI is used for generating the majority or all of the creative aspects. However, they clarified that music incorporating AI in a secondary capacity would still be allowed. This decision comes in response to the increasing prevalence of AI-generated music in recent months.

In July, a Madonna cover featuring AI-generated vocals and drums topped the Australian charts, sparking controversy. Streaming giant Spotify plans to introduce an "AI Persona" badge to distinguish AI-generated content from human-made content. Over a third of new uploads to Apple Music are entirely produced using AI, according to a platform executive.

In a similar vein, several prominent music industry organizations recently introduced a labeling system for AI-generated content, hoping to standardize its usage. ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd emphasized that these modifications aim to uphold the "human nature of artistry" in an era of rapid technological advancement. She added that the ARIA Charts will continue to be a transparent reflection of the music consumed in Australia, but a chart that rewards unlicensed AI output would undermine the very foundation of the recorded music industry they represent.
