21-year-old found dead in galamsey pit at Twumkrom

A 21-year-old man named Kwame Baah Donalson, also known as "Jawas", was discovered dead in a galamsey pit at Twumkrom, located in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Bono Region. The deceased had reportedly left his home three days prior to his death, and his absence alarmed family members and neighbors who initiated a search for him.

His decomposed body was found on Friday, August 21, 2026, floating in the water with his personal belongings inside a bag. Neighbors suspect foul play and have demanded that the police investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. They claim that the pit where his body was found is within the concession of a small-scale mining company called JegriBekala.

It is uncertain whether the young man was involved in illegal mining activities in the area. Edmond Kusi, the Assemblyman for the Twumkrom Electoral Area, expressed that residents have been living in fear since the mysterious death. He urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and arrest anyone found responsible.

A joint team comprising police personnel and the Ghana National Fire Service retrieved the body from the pit and transported it to the hospital for preservation and autopsy. Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah of the Bono Regional Police confirmed the incident, but stated that the Regional Police Command had not yet received a full briefing on the matter.
