Young Girl Dies From Rare Brain-Eating Amoeba

An 8-year-old girl in Louisiana has passed away after contracting an extremely rare brain-eating amoeba, according to her family. Lillian Smart succumbed to an infection from Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba commonly found in warm freshwater across the U.S. Symptoms typically arise when the amoeba enters the body through the nose and migrates to the brain, leading to a condition known as primary amoebic meningoencephalitis.

This infection is almost always fatal, with fewer than 10 cases reported annually in the U.S. on average. Lillian's parents, Daniel and Rebecca Smart, expressed their grief, noting that the severity of her brain injuries left her little body no chance of recovery. Louisiana's health department confirmed that this marks the state's first confirmed Naegleria fowleri infection since 2013.

The amoeba was likely contracted during a swim at Lake Claiborne in northern Louisiana. The infection occurs when water containing the amoeba is drawn into the nose, making it impossible for the disease to spread from person to person. While Naegleria fowleri is naturally present in warm freshwater bodies year-round, especially during the summer in the southern U.S., there are no regular environmental tests for the amoeba in natural water sources.

The Louisiana Department of Health emphasizes that this infection remains highly rare, with only around 180 confirmed cases in the U.S. since 1937.
