For Shaun Kong, a regular user of the platform, the allure lies in its wide variety of products, from sports gear to everyday items, often at prices lower than what he’d find in Malaysia.

However, the reality for local businesses is far grimmer. Malaysian retailers warn that the influx of cheap, factory-direct goods from platforms like Pinduoduo is eroding their profit margins. These local businesses, which include small and medium-sized enterprises, struggle to compete with the same-day, low-cost shipping offered by Pinduoduo.

The Malaysian government has attempted to address the issue with a 10% tax on goods under RM500, but the debate over the fairness of cross-border e-commerce continues to divide policymakers, business owners, and consumers.
