Workers in China worry over being replaced as they adapt to the growing impact of AI on jobs

Workers in China are growing increasingly concerned about being replaced by artificial intelligence (AI) as the technology is rapidly adopted across various industries, including computer programming, script writing, and physical tasks. This shift is being driven by government policies that encourage businesses and individuals to utilize AI applications and robotics in all aspects of life.

Fei Zhaojun, a computer programmer from Beijing, was laid off along with around 160 of his colleagues after his boss inquired if AI could soon replace human coders. In China, the response to AI is generally more positive compared to other countries, with most people expressing either a positive, neutral, or mildly interested attitude towards the technology, according to Shujing He, a senior analyst at Plenum, a Beijing-based advisory and research firm.

As a result, many displaced workers are eager to explore AI-enabled businesses and independent ventures. Fei Zhaojun, for instance, has turned to creating short videos, albeit without generating a significant income, as he adapts to the changing job market. The impact of AI extends beyond traditional industries, affecting sectors such as short drama production, where the number of live-action short and vertical video series has fallen by around 75% in the first quarter of the year compared to the previous year.

While China's government aims to infuse AI across many industries as part of its "AI Plus" initiative and five-year plan through 2030, the long-term effects of AI on employment remain uncertain, potentially exacerbating the employment growth problem and posing challenges to social stability.
