Wildfire nears Reno, Nevada, with thousands ordered to evacuate

A rapidly spreading wildfire, known as the Hawk Fire, advanced perilously close to Reno, Nevada, on Sunday, prompting authorities to order nearly 90,000 people to evacuate their homes. The fire, which began on Saturday, rapidly expanded to over 23 square miles, engulfing the rugged Peavine Peak area within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The close proximity of homes and businesses to the forest's foothills exacerbated the situation, creating a dangerous environment for residents and firefighters alike.

The blaze proved particularly challenging for emergency crews, as shifting winds made it difficult for them to control the fire's progression. Despite their efforts, multiple fire trucks were even overwhelmed by the fast-moving flames. As authorities scrambled to contain the blaze, they confirmed that at least six individuals had been injured, including three first responders and three civilians.

Although officials stated that the fire was "human-caused," they did not disclose the specific details of their determination or whether the fire was deliberately set or inadvertently ignited. The extent of the destruction became increasingly apparent as the fire spread, with the "GO NOW" evacuation zone encompassing an area that included the edge of the University of Nevada campus.

In addition, another 45,000 residents found themselves within the adjacent evacuation warning zone, further intensifying the evacuation efforts.

Authorities emphatically urged all evacuated residents to leave their homes and prepare for a prolonged absence, potentially lasting several days.
