Why our female candidate quit 2027 presidential race — YPP

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) announced that its former presidential candidate, Anita Chukwu, voluntarily withdrew from the 2027 presidential race due to concerns raised by her family regarding the security situation in certain areas of the country. Chukwu formally communicated her decision to the party leadership through a letter dated August 12, 2026.

The party clarified this information after rumors and misinformation circulated about her withdrawal. Anita Chukwu had been selected as the YPP presidential candidate at the party's 3rd Elective National Convention and Presidential Primary held on May 30, 2026. She was chosen based on her proven track record, competence, and capability to execute the party's manifesto focused on creating a just, equitable, and prosperous society.

However, after consulting her family, Chukwu reconsidered her participation in the race, citing the extensive travel, movement, and public exposure associated with a nationwide presidential campaign as a significant factor. The YPP stated that her decision was voluntary and not influenced by any external pressure or coercion. Following her withdrawal, the party attempted to replace her with another qualified female candidate but was unsuccessful.

This led to a fresh presidential substitution primary on August 21, 2026, which resulted in Peter Agada being chosen as the party's new presidential candidate. Despite her withdrawal, Anita Chukwu maintains her status within the YPP, valued for her contributions to the party's progressive agenda. The party reaffirmed its commitment to gender inclusion, emphasizing that her withdrawal does not reflect a departure from this principle.
