Who Was Sean Grayson? Ex-Deputy Who Killed Sonya Massey Dies at 32

Sean Grayson, a former Illinois sheriff's deputy convicted of fatally shooting Sonya Massey, died at the age of 32 while serving a 20-year prison sentence. Grayson was convicted after body camera footage showed him shooting Massey inside her Springfield home in July 2024. The killing sparked widespread outrage and led to a conviction for Grayson.

Despite his advanced stage 4 colon cancer, Illinois authorities denied his request for medical release in July 2025, and he died on August 23, 2025, while in state custody, according to his attorney Daniel Fultz. Grayson's background, including past DUI arrests, was scrutinized in the aftermath of the shooting, but officials stated he had undergone required background checks and evaluations before being hired by the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office in May 2023.

The shooting prompted reform efforts within the Sheriff's Office and a $10 million settlement with Massey's family in early 2025. Massey's family expressed their continued grief over her loss, stating that Grayson's death in custody does not bring her back.
