30 killed after huge pile of rubbish collapses in Guinea

At least 30 individuals lost their lives following the collapse of a waste landfill mound in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, according to the government. A further 22 people sustained injuries, with six of those considered to be in serious condition. The incident occurred around 02:00 local time on the night of heavy rainfall. The government has mobilized substantial resources and personnel, including the military, to aid in the search for potential survivors.

One witness recounted her distress as she described her five children being among the victims. There are apprehensions that the overall death toll may continue to rise. Rescue teams have been utilizing excavators to sift through the scattered debris at the site, as neighboring residents have gathered to witness the ongoing efforts.

Guinea's Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah paid a visit to the scene to gauge the extent of the damage and direct the search operations. Neighbourhood leader Lancine Sylla expressed his concerns, stating that he anticipated a high number of fatalities. "We have recovered 18 bodies that have been transported to the morgue," he reported. Another landslide at the same location claimed the lives of ten people in 2017.
