Volkswagen reveals all-new Tukan half-tonne bakkie - and it could come to South Africa

Volkswagen has unveiled its all-new Tukan half-tonne bakkie in Brazil, signaling the replacement of the long-serving Saveiro compact bakkie in South Africa. The Tukan aims to make a significant impact in the competitive South American market, where it will compete against popular brands such as Fiat, Chevrolet, and Ford. The vehicle will be available in both single-cab and double-cab variants, with the double-cab model featuring the top-of-the-line 'Extreme' trim, while the single-cab comes in the basic 'Robust' trim, featuring unpainted bumpers.

Although the original Saveiro bakkie never saw a South African market, Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA) has expressed optimism about the Tukan's potential, suggesting that local production of a smaller bakkie could be feasible and possibly linked to the upcoming Tengo compact SUV, set for local production by 2027. The Tukan's design boasts a completely unique rear suspension and will be the firm's first MQB modular platform vehicle to feature rear leaf springs, providing increased load-carrying capacity.

Although the exact payload capacity and engine line-up remain undisclosed, rumors suggest a payload of over 700kg and potential engine options ranging from a 1.0 TSI to a 1.5-litre 'Evo' turbopetrol engine. Production of the Tukan is set to begin in 2027 at Volkswagen's São José dos Pinhais plant in Brazil, with local estimates suggesting a possible 2029 introduction to South Africa, should the vehicle receive the necessary approval.
