Video throwback: Late I-Show Pepper, Ogogo led Hubert Ogunde’s burial procession in 1990

A video has surfaced showcasing veteran actors Taiwo Hassan, known as Ogogo, and I-Show Pepper leading chants during Hubert Ogunde's burial procession in 1990. The historical footage, obtained from the Ogunde Museum, depicts the Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners performing at the National Arts Theatre in Lagos. The throwback clip, shared on X and Facebook by Yemi King, reveals Ogogo performing traditional songs and chants while I-Show Pepper leads the dirge and procession.

Ogunde, a pioneer of Nigerian theatre and one of the leading figures in modern Yoruba theatre, passed away in London on April 4, 1990, at the age of 55. Ogogo, a recognizable face in Yoruba-language cinema, was only 30 years old at the time and would sadly pass away 36 years later. I-Show Pepper, who also took part in Ogunde's burial, succumbed to illness on December 28, 1992.
