Ukraine’s amputee veterans celebrate independence day with grueling endurance challenge

Ukrainian amputee veterans celebrated Independence Day on Monday by participating in an arduous endurance race that spanned over 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) across the nation. The final day of the week-long event, known as Iron Week, concluded at a lake outside Kyiv, the capital city. War veterans donned wetsuits and removed their prosthetics to complete the final leg of the grueling challenge.

Led by three-time Olympic triathlete Danylo Sapunov, the competition aims to unite injured soldiers and veterans as they endure more than four years of conflict since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. Sapunov emphasized that the event is not about competition, but about participation and unity. Among the participants was Yevhenii Lakhnenko, a 46-year-old army serviceman who lost his right arm and left leg in an October 2025 attack.

Lakhnenko highlighted the importance of swimming in his recovery and expressed pride in Ukraine's resilience. Maksym Yuzviak, a 35-year-old strike-drone operator who lost both legs in January 2025, emphasized that Ukraine's independence lies in the actions of its people.
