Ukraine’s amputee veterans celebrate independence day with grueling endurance challenge

Ukraine stands firm in its quest for peace, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy declared during an Independence Day address on Monday, amid a defiant stance against Russian aggression. The 35th anniversary of Ukraine's separation from the Soviet Union was marked by foreign dignitaries, including British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and European Council President Antonio Costa.

Burnham, making his inaugural visit as prime minister, aimed to pledge British backing for enhancing Ukraine's domestic production of long-range missiles, alongside co-chairing a virtual meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The primary focus was Ukraine's plea for additional air defense systems to counter Russian ballistic missiles striking Ukrainian cities.

Wearing a traditional embroidered shirt, Zelenskiy expressed gratitude to the foreign leaders who came to Kyiv, vowing to seek a resolution to Russia's ongoing "ballistic terror." He emphasized that Ukraine desires peace but is unwilling to cede without a fight. Rejecting Russia's repeated demand to surrender parts of eastern Donbas, Zelenskiy stated, "Ukraine is different and will not give away what is its own."

The conflict, which has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and devastated Ukrainian territory since Russia's February 2022 invasion, has seen Ukraine's defense industry achieving notable successes, such as strikes using naval drones and mid- and long-range attacks penetrating deep into Russia. However, Ukraine still seeks to boost its production of the Flamingo cruise missile to intensify the campaign against Russia this winter.

British support is expected to include using classified technology to expedite the production of European SCALP cruise missiles. Despite a slowdown in Russia's military advances this year, the Kremlin warned London of potential consequences for supplying drones to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia has intensified air strikes against cities in eastern Ukraine, exploiting the country's shortage of anti-ballistic missiles.

Ukraine's defense funding gap of $27 billion this year also complicates its efforts. Paying tribute to the nation's defenders, Zelenskiy called on allies to support Ukraine fully, urging them to provide necessary resources to halt the war, negotiate with Russia, and impose further sanctions. He expressed hope that the U.S. would overcome its contradictions and phobias regarding Russia, while urging China to cease its silence.
