Trump’s North Korea gamble deepens Asia’s doubts over US alliances

President Donald Trump's decision to scale back military exercises with South Korea while seeking renewed engagement with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has caused growing doubts among U.S. allies in Asia. The move has heightened concerns about the reliability of U.S. alliances, as Japan, Taiwan, and India reassess their level of reliance on Washington amid fears that shifting U.S. priorities may come at their expense.

Senior analyst Jeremy Chan noted that the decision could fuel doubts about U.S. security commitments in the region, while Japanese lawmaker Itsunori Onodera warned that Trump's push for talks could backfire and strengthen North Korea's position. Despite Trump's overtures, North Korea fired ballistic missiles off its east coast, triggering alerts in South Korea and Japan.

Japanese officials are concerned that Trump may demand a sharp increase for hosting U.S. forces, which would be politically difficult to accept. The upcoming U.S.-Japan military exercises in October could also be used as leverage by Trump. Meanwhile, Taiwan is closely watching Trump's upcoming summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as the island faces growing pressure from China and Trump has held up approval of a US$14 billion arms sales package to Taipei.

The decision has also shaken confidence in India, where analysts fear the U.S. may abandon efforts to draw New Delhi closer as a strategic counterweight to China and Russia.
