Trump announces new 50% tariff on Canadian cars, trucks and steel

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new 50% tariff on automobiles, crucial raw materials, and steel from Canada, intensifying the already strained trade relations between the two countries. The tariffs are set to take effect on January 1, 2027, affecting a wide range of products. In a social media post, Trump criticized Canada for "ripping off" the U.S. "for years" and labeled them among the "worst nations in the world to deal with."

He emphasized that Canada relies on the U.S., accounting for 95% of its trade, which is the opposite of the truth. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney anticipated the move, stating it was not surprising that the U.S. would retaliate against Canada's unjustified tariffs. Carney expressed concern for American workers in states like Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky who depend heavily on Canadian demand for automobiles, surpassing the combined demand from the European Union, Japan, Korea, and the United Kingdom.

He urged the U.S. to engage in negotiations with a more favorable attitude and a true partnership approach. The announcement comes after the collapse of a potential deal to reduce tariffs on automobiles and other materials. Canada rejected the latest deal, accusing the U.S. of making excessive demands and offering limited concessions.

Canada and the U.S. have historically enjoyed strong economic ties, with bilateral trade reaching approximately $909 billion, according to the U.S. Trade Representative's office. However, Trump's second term and his aggressive trade policies have signaled the end of the "deep ties" era between the two nations, with Carney vowing to match the American tariffs "dollar for dollar."
