Third time the charm? Democrat Christina Bohannan tries again in pivotal US House race in Iowa

Christina Bohannan, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. House, made an appearance at the Scott County Democrats Annual Family Picnic in Bettendorf, Iowa, on Sunday, August 16, 2026. Despite her background as a university professor from the liberal Iowa City, Bohannan was present at a roadside bar and grill in Columbus Junction, a rural county where Republican Donald Trump secured a significant victory two years ago.

She acknowledged that her campaign required a lot of effort to gain the trust of voters in the large district. This was Bohannan’s third attempt at securing a congressional seat; she lost to Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District in both 2022 and 2024. Now, she hopes that Trump's declining popularity, healthcare challenges, and economic concerns might give her the edge in this race, which could potentially aid Democrats in regaining control of the U.S. House.

Miller-Meeks, on the other hand, portrays Bohannan as a "radical progressive." If Bohannan manages to win this time, it could mark the beginning of a nationwide trend that Democrats are anticipating. To bridge the Republican gap, Bohannan has been actively visiting rural counties, including Louisa County, which she hadn't visited in the months leading up to the 2024 election.

She lost the previous election to Miller-Meeks by a mere 799 votes, which was the second-closest House race that year. Iowa’s 1st District is a diverse geographical area encompassing both rural and urban-suburban pockets, larger in size than Massachusetts and home to over half of its counties with populations under 20,000 residents.

Cindy Starr and her husband Tim Knutson, who had never met Bohannan before, made the journey from nearby Wapello to witness her at 92 Roadside, a social hub in Louisa County. Starr, a 62-year-old retired social worker, admitted that they had not heard of any campaign events for Bohannan prior to the visit.
