Thailand has raised security operations in three southern border regions – Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala – following a series of attacks over the weekend. The National Crisis Management Commission Vice Chairman, Chatchai Bangchuad, stated that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered security agencies to assess the current situation, while the Government Operation Task Force for Internal Security Region 4 has deployed personnel to control the affected areas.

The main objective is to ensure safety and minimize the impact on local residents, shops, and local businesses, according to the Palace on Monday. On Saturday, a series of arson attacks were reported in Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala, targeting government buildings, shops, vehicles, and utility poles. At least three injuries were reported in Narathiwat.

More than 50 incidents were reported in the three regions during the end of last week. Narathiwat was put under a curfew from 10:15 pm Saturday until 6 am Sunday, followed by dozens of planned incidents across the region. Attacks and arson incidents were reported on Sunday, including at Pho Ming Town Hall in Panare, Pattani, where several vehicles were set ablaze.

No injuries were reported. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Chatchai stated that the recent incident is believed to be a symbolic response to the tightened security operations by the government following the killing of five border guards in Narathiwat last month. He warned against linking all incidents to the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), while noting that the violence may involve local gang activity and terrorist networks.

Meanwhile, Anutin, who is also a minister of state, convened an emergency meeting with security agencies on Monday to assess the situation, focusing on risk collection and early warning against shortcomings in preparedness. The meeting also included Crisis Management Commission Chairman Chatchai, Minister of Foreign Affairs Phuangketkeow, and National Risk Management Agency Director Thanat Suwananon.
