Singapore and Ecuador seek deeper cooperation in areas including trade, food security

Singapore and Ecuador are seeking to bolster their relationship through cooperation in various sectors, including trade, food security, digitalisation, logistics, and agriculture, as they aim to strengthen economic ties between Southeast Asia and Latin America. Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa Azín paid an official visit to Singapore, marking the first such visit by an Ecuadorian president to the country, which Prime Minister Lawrence described as a "significant milestone" in bilateral relations.

During the visit, both nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding on development cooperation. Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence expressed his keen interest in deepening relations with Ecuador and Latin America, focusing on areas such as food security, trade, logistics, and digitalisation. He highlighted the potential of Ecuador's strategic location as a gateway to the Pacific coast of South America, which could help Singapore companies access opportunities in the Andean region and other markets in Latin America.

Ecuador's agricultural and marine resources, including bananas, cocoa, and shrimp, were noted as areas for potential cooperation. Singapore companies have already established partnerships in Ecuador, such as DiMuto, which has helped digitise and trace agricultural exports to Asian markets, and PSA Marine, which provides pilotage and boat services at Ecuadorian ports like Guayaquil and Posorja.

Singapore and Ecuador share a commitment to openness regarding trade and investment, with both serving as gateways to their respective regions. Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam praised Ecuador's application to become an associate state of the Pacific Alliance, which he believes will create more economic opportunities between the two countries.

Both nations also shared interests in preserving natural and cultural heritage, with Ecuador boasting five UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Quito, the Galápagos Islands, and Sangay National Park, while Singapore has its own UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Singapore Botanical Gardens. The new Memorandum of Understanding on development cooperation is intended to be the starting point for a stronger partnership between Singapore and Ecuador in areas of mutual interest, such as trade, education, governance, digitalisation, and public health.
