Religion must unite, not divide Nigerians — Fashola

Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) has advocated for greater religious tolerance in Nigeria, arguing that faith should serve as a unifying force rather than a divisive one. At the annual "God in My Life" lecture organized by the Torchbearer Society of the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral (AVMCC), Fashola, a Muslim, emphasized the importance of respecting each other's religious beliefs.

He stressed that religion should remain a personal conviction and should never be imposed on others. Fashola called on Nigerians of different faiths to coexist peacefully, highlighting that this was essential for national cohesion. Describing God as the ultimate architect of the universe, Fashola noted that divine presence could be seen in various aspects of human life, including family, friends, associates, schools, and workplaces.

Reflecting on his own life, Fashola recounted his early association with the Anglican Church and how his experiences contributed to his upbringing and personal development. He also attributed survival during youthful recklessness to divine providence. Challenging the audience to contemplate human control over life's journey, Fashola asked if anyone could decide the sequence of their life's events.

He urged people to recognize the influence of God in their lives, despite the uncertainties and experiences that accompany human existence. Rt. Revd. Olusola Odedeji, the Chief Host and Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lagos West, described the "God in My Life" program as an opportunity for reflection, testimony, and gratitude.

The bishop praised Fashola for serving as a role model to young people, noting the large number of youths attending the event from across the diocese.
