President Donald Trump's administration has imposed a 50% tariff on a wide range of Canadian products entering the United States. These tariffs, which began on August 24th, are expected to affect approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, accounting for roughly 5% of Canada's total exports to the U.S. in the previous year.

While this may not represent the majority of Canada's exports, the 50% tariff rate is considered punitive. Higher prices due to these tariffs could impact Canadian households, adding to the recent spikes in prices caused by previously-imposed levies.

The list of goods subject to the 50% tariff includes a diverse array of products, ranging from natural honey and bulbs for plants to alcohol, furniture knobs, and even Christmas decorations. This extensive range of items, totaling over 550, is a result of the Trump administration's decision to invoke a dormant 1930s law that allows the president to impose tariffs of up to 50% against countries believed to have discriminated against U.S. businesses.

Canada's Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has vowed to retaliate by imposing dollar-for-dollar tariffs on U.S. goods, starting September 8th. The retaliation is expected to target U.S. steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. As the trade war continues, Trump has threatened further escalation, suggesting the possibility of increasing existing import taxes on automobiles next year.
