PPP chief slams justice nomination issue in 1st meeting with new DPK leader

Rep. Jang Dong-hyeok, leader of the People Power Party (PPP), voiced strong criticism against the presidential office and the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) over the contentious nomination procedure for Supreme Court justices in his initial meeting with newly elected DPK leader Kim Min-seok on Monday. This was an unexpected occurrence, as Kim's courtesy call and inaugural encounter with the opposition leader took place on August 17, following his election to the position.

During their meeting, Jang highlighted the controversy surrounding Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae's decision to submit written recommendations for two justice nominees to President Lee Jae Myung, diverging from the norm of arranging a personal meeting with the president to make such recommendations. This departure from the established protocol triggered backlash from the ruling coalition and the presidential office.

Jang emphasized that the issue revolved around preserving judicial independence. He attributed the PPP's concerns to allegations that the Lee administration and the ruling bloc were attempting to influence the judiciary by nominating individuals who are sympathetic to them. The PPP had previously raised similar concerns regarding an incident that occurred in the mid-2000s.
