Police arrest suspect in GH¢1.1m fake gold scam at Berekum

On August 17, 2026, the Bono Regional Police Command apprehended 36-year-old Gyamfi Christian for his suspected involvement in a fraudulent gold scheme in the Berekum Municipality. The suspect is believed to be part of a group that allegedly sold 110 troy ounces of counterfeit gold to a gold aggregator for GH¢1.1 million in July 2026.

The victim, 29-year-old Christopher Awuni, informed the police that four men posing as gold sellers conducted the transaction. Subsequent testing confirmed the gold's falsity, and it remains in police custody as evidence. The Bono Regional Police Command, in a press release, stated that Christian was arrested on the same day at his hideout in Wamfie, Dormaa East District.

During questioning, he confessed to his part in the deal and revealed that it took place in Drobo, Jaman South Municipality. He identified three other members of the group - Abraham, alias Frenchman (the alleged leader), Isaac Antwi, and Balthazar - all of whom are currently wanted by the police. Preliminary investigations have uncovered that the group defrauded another individual of GH¢1.4 million in Drobo earlier this year.

Christian is currently in police custody and cooperating with the investigation as authorities work to apprehend the remaining suspects. The police have cautioned the public to exercise caution when engaging in gold transactions and to report any suspicious activities to the police.
