Police arrest suspect in GH¢1.1m fake gold scam at Berekum

The Bono Regional Police Command in Ghana has apprehended a 36-year-old individual, Gyamfi Christian, in relation to a purported gold scam amounting to GH¢1.1 million in the Bono Region. The suspect was apprehended following intelligence-driven investigations initiated by a complaint from Christopher Awuni, a gold aggregator, who reported being swindled out of GH¢1.1 million in July 2026 by four men posing as legitimate gold sellers.

The gold was subsequently discovered to be counterfeit, prompting further investigation into the transaction. The suspect, along with three alleged accomplices, has been named by the suspect during interrogation. The suspect was apprehended on August 17, 2026, at his hideout in Wamfie, Dormaa East District. The counterfeit gold has been retained as evidence, while the remaining accomplices are at large, and efforts are being made to locate and apprehend them.

The investigation has also revealed a possible second victim who allegedly lost about GH¢1.4 million in a separate alleged fake gold transaction at Drobo earlier this year. The incident has raised concerns about organized fraudsters exploiting Ghana's lucrative gold industry through sophisticated scams. The Police have cautioned gold dealers, aggregators, and buyers to exercise utmost vigilance and due diligence before committing large sums to gold transactions and urged reporting of suspicious activities to the authorities.
