Plateau: MACBAN alleges killing of 14 cows, rustling 29 others

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, in Plateau State, has accused suspected Berom militia gangs of killing 14 cows and stealing 29 more in Gero community, Gyel District, Jos South Local Government Area. This incident occurred on August 22, 2026, according to a statement released by MACBAN chairman, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo.

The alleged attack took place when peaceful Fulani herders were grazing their cattle without trespassing on any farms. Babayo reported that armed attackers, identified as Berom militia, shot dead 14 cows and stole 29 others after the herders fled for safety. This most recent attack is troubling, as it follows two similar incidents in June 2026 in Gero and Nyongo.

MACBAN urges the Plateau State Government, Inspector-General of Police, Operation Safe Haven, Department of State Services, and other security agencies to investigate the incident, recover the stolen cattle, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators, and ensure justice is served. The organization emphasizes the need for equal protection under the law for all Nigerians, irrespective of ethnicity, occupation, or location.

MACBAN remains committed to peace, lawful coexistence, and dialogue, but calls for adequate security measures to protect vulnerable pastoral communities.
