MP Geoffrey Wandeto warns of rising voter bribery ahead of 2027 elections

MP Geoffrey Wandeto, a representative for Tetu in Kenya, has expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of voter bribery in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election. Speaking on a television program on August 24, 2026, Wandeto highlighted that some Kenyans are being influenced or pressured to support specific candidates due to bribery efforts.

Wandeto called for clearer guidelines on campaign financing and electoral rules to ensure candidates adhere to regulations and allow voters to make autonomous decisions. He noted that voter bribery is at an all-time high, undermining the ability of citizens to choose their representatives freely.

The MP discussed the challenges of regulating campaign financing, noting that candidates often rely on various sources of funding, such as personal income, friends, and well-wishers. Wandeto emphasized the need for clear rules regarding campaign financing, stating that these regulations should not be manipulated for political advantage.

He also addressed the requirement for candidates to appoint individuals, like accountants, to oversee campaign contributions and expenditures. While acknowledging the administrative burden this could impose on candidates, Wandeto argued that compliance requirements should be fair and transparent.

Wandeto stressed that voter bribery poses a threat to the democratic process by affecting voters' ability to make independent choices, particularly when financial incentives or other inducements are offered during political mobilization. He advocated for the proactive strengthening of electoral regulations to prepare for the 2027 elections and prevent the erosion of democratic integrity.
