Perceptions of Equity, Challenges, and Identity-Based Differences Among U.S. Entomologists

In 2023, a study was conducted to explore the perceptions of equity, inclusion, and exclusion among entomologists in the United States. The research surveyed 47 self-identified entomologists, employing a mixed-methods approach that combined qualitative and quantitative measures to understand their views on these crucial issues.

The respondents emphasized the necessity for race-conscious funding opportunities, comprehensive inclusion efforts through geographically diverse outreach, and access to role models and mentors who shared their identities. These suggestions aimed to address the perceived structural inequities and retention challenges faced by entomologists of color.

When compared to a similar study conducted in 2013, the 2023 findings revealed a shift in focus from intrinsic and age-based barriers to recruitment, such as lack of interest and limited K-12 outreach, to more structural inequities and retention needs. While the 2013 study highlighted the limited interest and inadequate outreach as primary obstacles, the 2023 study pointed towards systemic exclusion as the main concern.

The 2013 comparison, however, is considered exploratory due to differences in sample size and scope between the two studies. Despite these limitations, the 2023 study underscores the persistence of inequities in the entomology discipline and identifies opportunities to foster a more inclusive and representative field.
