One operative, six suspected secessionists killed in Anambra gun battle

In Anambra State, a joint security team conducted a raid on suspected secessionist hideouts in Ogbaru Local Government Area, resulting in a gun battle that claimed the lives of six suspected members of the group. One security operative lost their life during the operation, while another sustained injuries after an explosive device detonated, likely planted in the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed this information in a statement on Sunday. The operation, aimed at dismantling criminal networks and violent non-state actors, involved various officials from different agencies and the Nigerian Navy. Following credible intelligence, the security team trekked for four hours through challenging terrain and thick palm forest to reach a suspected armed criminal camp.

Upon sighting the security personnel, the suspects opened fire, leading to a prolonged exchange of gunfire. After the encounter, six suspected members were neutralized, while others fled the area, some injured. The police recovered two pump-action guns and charms from the camps and dismantled identified structures linked to the group.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji, praised the security personnel and community-based operatives for their professionalism and the importance of intelligence sharing and inter-agency cooperation. He also expressed condolences to the family of the slain operative and wished the injured one a speedy recovery.
