Afoko Files Chairmanship Papers Morrow

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Paul Awentami Afoko is set to submit his completed nomination papers for the party’s National Chairmanship race on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Mr Afoko is expected to arrive at the NPP’s national headquarters in Accra to conclude the formal filing process, having already expressed his intention to seek the position and obtained his nomination forms.

This filing takes place within the party’s extended nomination window, which was extended from August 27 to August 29, 2026, due to a high number of aspirants vying for various national executive positions. Mr Afoko announced his ambition to contest the chairmanship in July and subsequently picked up his nomination forms on August 18 when the process commenced.

His campaign, centered on his "3R Agenda" of Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture, aims to restore unity within the party, fortify its structures, and position it to regain political power in the 2028 general elections. Mr Afoko asserts that the NPP must first reconcile internal divisions and rebuild confidence among grassroots supporters before launching a successful campaign to retake government.

To bolster his bid, he has been engaging delegates and grassroots supporters across various regions since declaring his intent. The submission of his nomination papers on Tuesday will formally propel his campaign into the subsequent phases of the NPP’s national officers election process. According to the election schedule, aspirants will undergo vetting from August 31 to September 3, with the results anticipated on September 5.

Candidates wishing to contest the vetting outcomes will have a chance to appeal between September 6 and 7. The national delegates’ election is slated for October 3, 2026, during which delegates will select the party’s next national officers. Mr Afoko, who previously held the NPP National Chairman position, is seeking to regain the role with a campaign emphasizing the healing of divisions within the party and the revival of its organizational strength before the 2028 elections.

His "3R Agenda" is projected to remain a cornerstone of his campaign as the party navigates through the diverse stages of its national officers’ election.
