Oman foreign minister to visit Tehran for talks on Strait of Hormuz

Oman's Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi is set to travel to Tehran on Tuesday for crucial talks with his Iranian counterpart. The discussions will center on the security of the Strait of Hormuz and its shipping lanes, an issue of great concern to both nations as key littoral states. This visit aims to bolster bilateral cooperation and sustained political consultations between Iran and Oman, two countries vital to maintaining peace and stability in the region.

The US President Donald Trump had previously threatened to bomb Oman if it interfered with US efforts to cease the ongoing conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Despite their ongoing disagreements, Oman has actively pursued separate discussions with Iran to establish arrangements for navigation within the crucial waterway.

The 14-point memorandum of understanding, negotiated in Islamabad and signed on June 17, served as an interim framework for ending the war and paving the way for longer-term negotiations on a nuclear agreement. However, the MoU expired on August 17 after both sides failed to reach consensus on the interpretation of the Strait of Hormuz clause.

Iran interprets the language in the text as recognizing its right to manage the entire strait, while the US views it as obligating Iran to ensure freedom of navigation and refrain from leveraging access to vital waterways. Oman shares the strait with Iran, and last week, the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Oman and Iran had reached an "understanding" regarding the waterway and were working to finalize a joint statement.

Oman's Foreign Minister Albusaidi's arrival follows diplomatic engagements by Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, who also visited Tehran on Monday. Pakistan, serving as an active mediator in indirect negotiations between the US and Iran, explains that Munir's trip is part of its efforts to promote regional peace and stability.

The US is preparing to implement what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent refers to as the "greatest financial offensive ever" targeting Iran's trade partners. Iran has dismissed the US threat, vowing to shut down all oil exports from the Gulf if the economic war persists. They have also issued a new warning to shipping vessels not to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without its explicit permission.

Treasury Secretary Bessent has issued a stern warning in an op-ed published in The Financial Times, promising to reveal severe measures against Iran amidst its near-continuous economic sanctions since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
