NYC businesses sue Mamdani over city-run grocery store plan, citing 'unfair competition'

Mayor Zohran Mamdani's proposed city-run grocery stores have sparked legal action from a coalition of New York City businesses. The Multicultural Business Coalition filed a lawsuit against Mamdani's administration, alleging that the planned stores would create unfair competition for local grocers and bodegas. Mamdani has pledged $70 million to develop five city-run supermarkets by 2029, with the first Bronx store set to open in 2027.

The lawsuit claims that the site selection for the stores is arbitrary and does not consider neighborhood needs, making it difficult for smaller stores to compete with the city-run locations, which will offer 30% discounts on core goods and rent subsidies from the Economic Development Corporation. The borough leaders behind the EDC, which manages city-owned property, said they consider factors like existing property, transit access, local income levels, and population density when choosing store locations, but did not disclose specific criteria.

While Mamdani maintains confidence in the legality and importance of the initiative, small business owners argue that the city-run supermarkets present an unfair challenge to existing vendors who have faced food insecurity for generations.
