NLA urges striking workers to return to talks amid salary dispute

The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has called on its striking workers and staff to return to the negotiation table and end their sit-down strike over salaries. This appeal came after negotiations over a proposed salary increase hit a standstill. The NLA maintained its commitment to resolving the issue and is working with the National Labour Commission (NLC) for an amicable solution through arbitration.

The disagreement arose when the local union demanded a 17% salary increase for 2026, whereas the authority granted a 12% increase. This decision was due to a tax liability issue tied to staff salaries from 2016 to 2022, which the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) identified. The NLA agreed to resolve the tax backlog, which amounted to over GH¢5 million, and also promised to correct the tax anomaly in future salary payments.

However, the union pushed for a more substantial 17% increase to offset the reduced take-home pay. The NLA's board accepted a 10% increase initially, but increased it to 12% after securing additional funds. The union declined the offer, leading to the declaration of a deadlock and referral to the NLC. The NLA had previously sought guidance from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) on March 11, 2026, and received a recommendation of an 8% salary increase.

Despite this, the dispute persisted. The NLA informed the union and staff to suspend their industrial action and resume negotiations. The organization also reassured stakeholders, including Lotto Marketing Companies, Private Lotto Operators, and third-party collaborators, that it remains dedicated to fulfilling its mandate of generating revenue for national development.

The NLA remains optimistic that the ongoing discussions with the NLC will lead to a resolution of the salary dispute.
